If You’re Stuck
Hand the card to station staff. The IC card stores information about your journey, so the problem is not always the balance. A previous entry or exit may not have recorded correctly, or another card in your wallet may have interfered with the reader. The gate often remembers more about your trip than you do.
Tiny Culture Note
An automatic ticket gate is doing several jobs in a fraction of a second. It reads the card, checks the journey record, calculates the fare, updates the balance, and decides whether to open—all while a line of commuters approaches at walking speed. The closed gate is not judging you. It is doing very fast bookkeeping.
