Why Did the Ticket Gate Say No?

You tap your IC card. Instead of the friendly beep you expected, the ticket gate closes in front of you.

For one dramatic second, it feels as if Japan’s entire railway system has reviewed your application and rejected it. It has not. The gate may need more balance, a cleaner tap, or help completing the record of your journey.

First Move

Step back, move to the side, and check the message on the gate display.

Quick steps

  1. Move aside and read the gate display.
  2. If the balance is low, charge the card. If you have multiple cards, try one by itself.
  3. If it still fails, use the staffed gate.

Use these phrases to speak or point when you need help.

Use at the staffed gate while showing the card. Kaado ga tsukaemasen. My card isn’t working.

If You See or Hear This

Zangaku fusoku It means: Insufficient balance. Your move Add money to the card.
Seisan It means: Fare adjustment. Your move Look for a fare-adjustment machine or ask staff.
Kakariin ni oshirase kudasai It means: Please contact a station attendant. Your move Take the card to the staffed gate.
Nyuujou kiroku It means: Entry record. Your move Staff may need to check or correct where your journey began.

If You’re Stuck

Hand the card to station staff. The IC card stores information about your journey, so the problem is not always the balance. A previous entry or exit may not have recorded correctly, or another card in your wallet may have interfered with the reader. The gate often remembers more about your trip than you do.

It reads the card, checks the journey record, calculates the fare, updates the balance, and decides whether to open—all while a line of commuters approaches at walking speed.
