First Move
Pause before the torii gate and walk through calmly, slightly to the side.
Quick steps
- Pause briefly before the torii gate.
- Walk through calmly without blocking others.
- If there is a water basin, clean your hands.
- Offer a coin at the main shrine if you want to pray.
- Step aside after praying so others can approach.
Don’t Do This
Don’t stand in the middle of the path for photos.
At many shrines, walking slightly to the side is a safer, more respectful move.
Don’t drink directly from the water basin.
Some people rinse their mouth as part of the ritual, but they are not drinking the water. If you are unsure, just clean your hands.
Don’t take photos where signs say not to.
Some shrine areas, objects, or ceremonies may restrict photography.
Don’t treat the space only as a photo spot.
A shrine can be a tourist spot and a religious place at the same time.
Say or show this
Use these phrases to speak or point when you need help.
If You See or Hear This
If You’re Stuck
Copy the flow, not every detail. Watch where people walk, where they line up, and where they step aside. If you are unsure about a ritual, it is okay to simply observe respectfully.
Tiny Culture Note
Shrines are part of everyday life in Japan. Respect matters more than perfect technique.
